I Corinthians 15:56-58 - “The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.”
This word of thanks comes at the end of Paul’s famous chapter on resurrection in I Corinthians 15. But before thanks the apostle acknowledges all of our respective realities. We sin. And since we sin, we die. This is why the resurrection is such an important teaching in the Christ following life. Jesus died to take away our sin, and he rose from the dead to take away our death.
Because of this, we can be thankful today no matter the circumstances. Whatever today looks like, we know that in the end, we are victorious over our fiercest enemies, sin and death. The word translated “victory” here may be emblazoned on your shoes or shirt even as you read this. The Nike brand comes from the Greek work “nike” (Pronounced “neekay”). It is word of triumph, overcoming, and winning. In the end, we win through Jesus. Sin is overcome. We triumph over death. For this we can be thankful to God today. Happy Thanksgiving!
