Mystery of Miracles

John 20:30-31 - “Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.”

As we fully enter into this season that the world calls “Christmas magic” we know there is a God in control who by his power does miracles. For us, Christmas began with the miracle of Jesus’ birth and continues in the lives of his people. By God’s grace and Holy Spirit power miracles still happen. And today’s verse tells us why God works miraculously.

God works miracles because he wants to signify something. That’s what the word “signs” meant in the original language of the Bible. Every miracle was signal that God is doing something eternal, that he is at work, and that he has power over all circumstances. What’s amazing is that John says that there were perhaps millions of miraculous signs that were not written.

Why signs and miracles? Ultimately, these signs were to point to Jesus as the Son of God and the promised Messiah who was sent to deliver people from sin. The miracles of Christ showed that he was who he said he was. And he still shows his power today. He doesn’t always answer as we wish, or do exactly what we would have liked. But he still works signs and wonders in his people. Look for his miracle work in your life today. In big and small ways, God is moving through signs.
